Abstract
Today, one of major sources of lead pollution of Yerevan – the capital of Armenia, are vehicles. The major portion of traffic-induced emissions accumulates both in soils and plants, the latter being the most sensitive testing system for determination of concentrations of toxicants and particularly lead in the environment. The obtained results indicated that for the studied period Pb concentrations in the leaves of trees varied 1.64-7.65 notably exceeding the mean background. The obtained data evidence that only 3 of all the 6 studied arboreous species display high intake rate and tolerance to lead pollution and thus are advisable for planting in Yerevan. Mean Pb concentrations in the studied vegetable species varied 0.58-3.1 and were also excessive vs. maximum acceptable concentrations. The obtained data allowed indication of vegetable species, too, with highest Pb accumulation properties and thus extremely harmful for public health. The obtained research data were compiled as a database, on which base a map of lead pollution of vegetation in the city was produced.
