Abstract
The Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (NKR) is located in the central part of the Caucasus and is characterized by diverse mountainous terrain with an average altitude of 1100 m and fluctuation range between 100-3724 m a.s.l. Like other mountainous countries, vast majority of natural ecosystems of the NKR represents by grasslands, which serve as a main feed basis for domestic livestock. Livestock breeding for the NKR has a strategic important meaning and there are good prerequisites for its further development: along with the large areas of grasslands (69% of agricultural lands) here are available a favorable climatic conditions. The calculations showed that grasslands are available in the NKR may supply with fodder more than threefold much number of livestock compared with that available now. Meanwhile, natural grasslands of the NKR, and especially near-village pastures, are in unfavorable conditions and one of the main reasons is improper grazing management. To develop a modern grazing system the factual materials related to grazing intensity, productivity, botanical composition (the proportion of high-quality grass and legume groups) etc. are needed to be compiled. This paper is devoted to the study of indicated issues, which summarizes the results of 2-year field and laboratory investigations.
